Here is the latest on Gustav and Hanna...

Gustav has 115mph and Hanna has 45 mph winds. Gustav has a predicted landfall winds of category 4, 135mph. Hannah could possibly become a hurricane as well. Here are the two maps of these storms...

Our weather story will remain the same with dry weather through Thursday. Highs will be in the lower 90s most of this period, and the humidity will begin to rise by Tuesday afternoon.

Friday-Sunday are still a question mark with Gustav and Hannah tracks still uncertain. I have a 30% chance of rain/storms for Friday-Sunday, with highs in the mid to upper 80s.

Saturday, August 30, 2008: 5pm

See Gustav discussion below...

First, our weather will continue dry with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s through Wednesday.

Thursday-Saturday's forecast all depend on the two storms and their tracks, but for now I will insert a 30% chance of rain/storms for these 3 days. Temps during this period will be in the mid 80s.

Gustav is now a CODE PURPLE storm...

Here are the visible and infared satallite images of Gustav...incredible pictures! The eye is very well formed and that proves it's intensification!

Gustav has rapidly strengthened into a Category 4 Hurricane with 150mph winds at this time. The track takes it to the central part of Louisiana. However, many things could divert Gustav from it's current projected track. Take mid level winds for example, if they are strong, Gustav will slam New Olreans, if they are weak, Gustav will stall and travel west right along the Gulf Coast from New Orleans all the way to Houston!

The NHC projects these wind speeds from Gustav...

Use this wind chart in corralation with the map of the track, and you will see that after it passes Cuba, it is expected to become a MONSTER, Category 5 storm by tomorrow afternoon, and by landfall at 2pm Monday (projection), the winds will be 145mph, a Category 4. This will be a very devastating storm to say the least!

I will post on Gustav occasionally, but for up to the minute reports on Gustav and all tropical weather, click on the National Hurricane Center link on the right side of the blog...

And one last thing to think about...here is the track of Tropical Storm Hanna...currently with winds of 50mph.

Where does it go from there and will it become a hurricane? The NHC says that it will not become a hurricane in the next 5 days, but where does it go after this, no one has a sure bet just yet.

Also, Tropical Storm Ike may make an appearance soon...

One final note, the BIG GAME is tomorrow at 3:30pm on ESPN. The matchup, of course, is the Louisville Cardinals vs. the Kentucky Wildcats.

GO CARDS!

Friday, August 29, 2008: 5:15pm

Today is the 3 year anniversary of one of the most destructive hurricanes of all time, Hurricane Katrina. This devastated the city of New Orleans and has left it's mark their forever. Now, Louisiana is under attack from yet another hurricane, Hurricane Gustav.

I will talk about that in just a second, but first I would like to take mention of our weather. I watched a storm developed just to our east in eastern Clark county, IN, and Oldham county, KY, but the sun continues to shine here. There is the potential for an isolated storm this evening, but don't bet on it.

Meanwhile, everyone's grass is dying and the next 5 days will not help the situation at all. It will be dry for the next 5 days with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Humidities will not be that uncomfortable through Monday, but that's really not the point here...the point is that it is simply TOO dry

Thursday-Friday have a 20% chance of rain/storms, but this is all dependent on the tropical systems we are watching. Highs over these two days will be in the mid 80s with higher humidities.

Now I will discuss the tropics...

As you can see, the tropics are very active right now. Not only do we have Gustav and Hanna to worry about, but there are other storms further to the east that could become tropical storms and/or hurricanes.

Gustav is of main concern to the US right now. As of 3:15pm today, Gustav became a hurricane once again with winds of 75mph. NHC predicts the storm to go towards Louisiana, but of course could hit anywhere from east Texas to Mobile, Alabama. Winds are predicted to be 125mph when it hits the west tip of Cuba, and 120mph when it nears the Gulf Coast.

Code YELLOW is here to stay for a while...

The CPC drought monitor has declared extreme southern Indiana and all of northcentral Kentucky under abnormally dry conditions. A moderate drought is ongoing in southeast Kentucky.

Simply put, we need some rain. If we are going to get some, then it will be tomorrow. I still think there is a 40% chance of showers/storms over our area tomorrow afternoon and evening. Temps will be in the upper 80s, and there will be sufficient humidity to produce some rain. However, this will not put an end to the dry period we are having. Also, please note that NOT EVERYONE will get rain, even though we'd like it that way...

Saturday-Thursday all look to be dry as well. Temps will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s, with humidities not that uncomfortable through Tuesday. However, humidities will increase towards the middle of next week. But, the dry weather continues no matter what the humidity...

You might be wondering what happened to the chance of rain we could have from Gustav. To see why I took the chance out, take a look at this map...

I took the rain chance out primarily because it appears as if the storm is heading northwest moving inland over Louisiana. If it continues this track, we won't get rain. Basically, it is way too far out for me to put a rain chance in if there's no clue where the hurricane is going...

Tropical Storm Gustav is currently pounding Cuba with heavy rain and 70mph. The NHC predicts landfall in Louisiana, though I think that anywhere from Louisiana east to Panama City, Florida, could see a landfall. The track of a hurricane is just entirely unpredictable, especially this far out. See the map above as a projection, not the actual track. This is where the NHC thinks the storm will go, but 90% of the time, a track made this far out is wrong!!! Anyway, the NHC is still predicting a landfall as a Cat. 3, with 115mph winds.

Also, there is now Tropical Storm Hannah, with 40mph winds. This storm is far away from any immenent landfall in the US, and I'm not sure if this one can hold together to cause any major damage to the US. Here's the track of this one...

Hannah is anticipated to gain winds of 80mph by Sunday.
We will simply have to see how all of this plays out, so keep checking the blog for more on our dry period and these two storms...

No relief...

Though a few light showers have been meandering across the area this afternoon, no relief from this latest rain shortage has come. Tomorrow will be no different, by skies will clear. Highs will be in the mid 80s.

Friday will bring our last chance of rain for a while. I have put a 40% chance of showers/storms in for Friday afternoon and evening. This could bring some relief, but not as much as we need to stop this latest dry streak.

Then we will have another dry period through at least Tuesday. Temps will rebound into the upper 80s to lower 90s. It will be very dry with not much humidity.

Wednesday may be dry and even hotter, but it all depends on the track of Gustav. We could have some very beneficial rains, or it could just be hot and dry some
more...

Speaking of Gustav, it is now a tropical storm with winds of 50mph. It has gotten stuck over Haiti and Hispanola, and is moving at a mere 3mph. It should gain speed, and regain hurricane strength by sometime tomorrow. The forecast from the NHC is this...

They predict a landfall on the gulf coast between Louisiana and the panhandle of Florida. The NHC is currently predicting winds of 115mph as it hits land on Labor Day.

One note, no major evacuations are taken place yet on the Gulf Coast. The LSU football team will still open it's season vs. Appalachian State at 5pm Saturday on ESPN.

Tuesday, August 26, 2008: 10pm

Fay did not save the day...

Fay has brought a few welcome downpours to a few areas the past couple days. However, today, there was a 5 minute downpour just 5 minutes from here, but at our house, not 1 drop!!! This is a prime example of just how random all of these showers are and how isolated they are...

Tomorrow morning I still believe there is a 30% chance for the Louisville/southern Indiana area to get a band of rain. However, if we don't get it tomorrow morning, we won't get it. Highs tomorrow will be around 80.

Thursday looks fine with sun and highs in the mid 80s.

The next system will make it's move by Friday, bringing us another 40% chance of showers/storms. However, this will not bring the needed relief that we need to get out of our dry spell.

And if we don't get any rain by Friday, then get ready for another dry spell. Saturday-Tuesday will all be dry with highs in the middle to upper 80s. The saving grace will be that our humidities will not be too high.

However, there is a storm that bears watching for the gulf coast and for our next great rain chance. I told you yesterday that Hurricane Gustav would not travel across Cuba as it was forecast yesterday. Check out today's forecast...

It will not cross Cuba and instead will go on the west side before hitting west Florida, or (most likely) heading into the Gulf and hitting anywhere from Texas to the panhandle of Florida. The winds are currently 75mph, but by Sunday, winds are forecasted to be at 120mph.

There is a loop current that goes between Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula and goes into the Gulf of Mexico, as well as off the Florida straits. This is a place where rapid hurricane intensification could occur. Here is a map of this phenomenon. The red areas are where the current is.

I knew that hurricanes typically intensified in the Gulf of Mexico, but didn't know why until I saw Belski's blog today...

So keep all of this in mind as this storm continues to churn in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico...

Monday, August 25, 2008: 7pm

Grain is pain and rain is gain...

Yes, the grass in our area is beginning to look like a dried up field, and we have had no rain in a long time...and again our chances of rain may be drying up again.

Tonight and tomorrow hold a chance of these isolated showers, but not a good soaking rain. Also, the sun is going to be hidden for a while because of these clouds from Fay. For this reason, I think that tomorrow and Wednesday will have temps staying in the upper 70s, and not making it to 80.

Tomorrow night-Thursday morning, we will have slightly better rain chances thanks to T.D. Fay. I think Wednesday morning holds our best chance of any rain from Fay, as a band of rain could move through. However, I only have a 40% chance of rain in the forecast because it is becoming more likely that all of this rain could miss to the east. I still think some welcome rain is possible, so stay tuned...

Meanwhile, Thursday should have any rain that is over our area ending. Highs will be in the lower 80s.

Friday could be an in between systems day, with temps in the middle 80s.

However, Friday night-Saturday afternoon, a small (30%) chance of showers and storms exists over our area.

After this, Sunday and Monday should be sunny, which is good news for the big Louisville vs. Kentucky football game on Sunday. Highs will be in the mid to possibly upper 80s.

And if you're looking for our next best chance of rain after Fay, look to the south as Tropical Storm Gustav is churning through the Caribbean.

Winds are currently 60mph, but they are expected to reach minimal hurricane strength before hitting Hispanola. This track shows the storm tracking directly over Cuba, but I am almost certain it will not do that. It will most likely track along the western coast of Cuba, like Fay, and then on from there. This could affect Labor Day plans in Florida or the Gulf of Mexico.

One last note...in the LLWS championship yesterday, the US captured it's 4th straight crown as Hawaii defeated Mexico 12-3.

Sunday, August 24, 2008: 6pm

Isolated storms are scattered around the area at this time. Isolated storms are possible through this evening, dissapating overnight.

For this reason, I believe that tomorrow and Tuesday will be dry, with cooler temps in the lower to mid 80s.

Fay's moisture will begin to makes it move a little sooner than previously expected. It appears that Fay's moisture will turn north by Wednesday, bringing us a chance of rain on Wednesday-Friday. The NWS says we could expect showers/storms by Tuesday, but will leave Tuesday dry for now. I think a 40% chance for these Wednesday and Thursday with a 20% on Friday. With cloud cover, temps will be in the lower 80s but with humidity with the tropical moisture in the area.

If we do get rain from Fay, we may have a short time to dry out with highs in the middle 80s. However, the next storm system could arrive next weekend...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

LLWS...Mexico beat Japan 5-4 and Hawaii had a 6 run final inning to beat Louisiana 7-5 yesterday. The championship is on ABC right now (I'm taping it), and Japan beat Louisiana 4-3 in the consolation game.

  • USA men's basketball wins gold by beating Spain 118-107.
  • USA men's water polo takes silver after losing to Hungary 14-10 in the gold medal match.
  • USA men's volleyball wins over Brazil 3-1 to capture the gold medal.

The next couple days hold rain chances as a weather system moves towards our area...

Today's temps will be around 90 with a 20% chance of a pop up shower/storm. Sunday will have a 40% chance of storms with highs in the middle 80s but the same humidity. Monday will have a 30% chance of lingering showers from the storm system on Sunday.

Tuesday-Wednesday should have slightly lower humidities with temps in the mid 80s. There could be an isolated storm these two days, but I will leave it out of the forecast for now.

Moisture from Fay could arrive here as soon as Thursday night and last through Saturday. It appears that some areas, especially east of Louisville, could get a soaking rain out of this. I will say a 40% chance or rain for Friday-Saturday morning. Temps will be in the rain cooled lower 80s over this period, but there will plenty of humidity with the tropical system around.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Olympics continue...
  • USA women's basketball win the gold medal game against Australia.
  • Men's baseball wins bronze medal game by beating Japan 8-4.

WE NEED RAIN!

And our chances of getting some have just gone up! Saturday-Monday hold a 30% chance of rain and storms. Humidities will be like today, but highs in the mid to upper 80s.

Tuesday-Wednesday appear to have a break. Temps will be in the mid 80s with a little less humidity.

However, Fay could finally get picked up and thrown into our area. We could have substancial rain from this depending on the track. I have a 50% chance of rain for Thursday-Friday, with rain possibly lingering into next weekend. Temps will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s due to the rain. Stay tuned for more on this ever changing forecast.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LLWS update: Tomorrow at 12:30pm on ABC: Japan will play Mexico, and at 3:30pm on ABC: Louisiana will play Hawaii.

The link for the incredible video is here again...click here to watch...

When I say this video is incredible, that does not mean that I like the fact that the man was severely hurt, I'm just in awe of the power on nature...

Meanwhile, our weather does not feature high winds, just sunny skies tomorrow with highs in the low 90s and uncomfortable humidities, much like today.

However, Saturday-Wednesday is an uncertain forecast with the track of Fay and the approaching cold front. Will stay with a 30% chance of rain/storms every day with highs in the upper 80s and humid conditions.

Thursday I will keep dry for now, with slightly lower humidities and highs in the upper 80s. However, the track of Fay is still uncertain, but if we do get rain from it, it should get out by Thursday...

Expectations of the next 3 days...

The next 3 days are expected to have temps around or just above 90 over must of the area. Humidities will gradually increase to uncomfortable levels ahead of the next system. However, though it will stay sunny, the haze will cause unsafe air quality for sensitive groups for the next few days.

Saturday will begin our next chance of rain, but will it be from Fay? Here's the track of Fay's remnants...

Saturday-Monday's rain/storm chances will be from the cold front from the west that will stall over our area. 30% chances are in order for these 3 days. Temps will remain in the mid to upper 80s with the enhanced humidity.

Tuesday-Wednesdsay, we may have to worry about Fay, or Fay could stall the front over our area for even longer. I think a 30% rain/storm chance for these days as well, but this could all change depending on the movement of Fay.

In case you are still wondering (like most of us are), Fay is forecasted to drift off the Florida coast and then hit land again with winds of 60mph (NHC). There is still a slight chance that Fay could go into the Gulf of Mexico later on this weekend...

I will post a link to an incredible video of a man being carried by a huge gust of wind during Fay...while flying a kite!!! Look for the link posted above this post...

Tropical Storm Fay hit Cape Romano, FL this morning with 65 mph winds. Here is the track of Fay. which is actually quite interesting. It will go through the Orlando area before heading out into the Atlantic. The NHC forecasts that it will become a minimal hurricane before hitting Jacksonville. It does not appear that Fay will bring us any rain in the near future.

Meanwhile, our weather should stay tranquil through the rest of the work week. The humidities will slowly increase, along with temperatures. Highs for the next 3 days will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Saturday-Tuesday will hold a different story. Some moisture from the storm will increase our humidities, but with Fay so far to our south, the storm from the west will slide into our area. However, Fay's movement and the weather pattern will cause this system to stall. Temps will be in the upper 80s all of these days, but a daily 30% chance of showers/storm exists...

Jeffersonville's little league dreams are over...

They lost to Washington today 3-2 in 7 innings (one longer than a standard game). They are eliminated from the competition. However, they made our area proud by just making it to the highest stage in Little League Baseball.

In the Olympics...day 11 of competition is over...
  • In the men's 400m hurdles, 3 Americans swept the medal stand. Angelo Taylor won gold, Kerren Clement silver, and Reshawn Jackson bronze.
  • Nastia Liukin won silver on uneven bars, though the score between her and gold medal winner He Kexin of China was a tie. Kexin won the tiebreaker, giving Nastia only a silver medal.
  • USA wins a sailing and wrestling gold medal.
  • Misty May and Kerry Walsh (beach volleyball), USA, advance to the gold medal final tomorrow night at 10:45pm. That will be LIVE on NBC.
  • USA women's water polo will play for the gold medal. They defeated Austrailia 9-8. They will play Netherlands on Thursday at 6:30am for the gold.
  • USA women's basketball defeated South Korea 104-60 to stay perfect on the Olympics and advance to the semifinals.

Monday, August 18, 2008: 5:30pm

Our great weather continues for just a couple more days...

Tuesday-Wednesday will be replays of today's weather, with highs in the upper 80s and comfortable humidities.

What happens next will be dependent on Tropical Storm Fay. Hurricane Warnings are in effect in parts of Florida, and winds are now at 60mph. This has to be one of the strangest tracks for a hurricane that I have seen once it comes inland. It seems to just aimlessly wander for 4 days, not effecting our weather.

This track is not very convincing at all to me, so our forecast will remain about the same. This storm is expected to hit Florida with 70mph winds tomorrow morning, and that is a sure thing on the track.

Now concerning our late week forecast...I think a 30% chance of rain for every day from Thursday-Saturday is fitting, as I still think that Fay will head our way. Highs over this period will be in the mid to upper 80s with increased humidities. Stay tuned for updates on this ever changing forecast.

Sunday-Monday's forecast are a blur. Depending on what Fay does, we could have a seemingly endless hot and dry spell continuing (if Fay stays to our south), or lingering showers and temps in the mid 80s. I would have to say the latter, but this storm is highly unpredictable.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jeffersonville's little league team suffered a crushing loss yesterday to Louisiana, 9-0. However, if they can regroup and win tomorrow's game vs. Washington at 2pm on ESPN, and if Maryland loses in a high scoring game, it is possible that Jeffersonville could still move on to the semifinals...

The Olympics continue...
  • Women's soccer wins over Japan 4-2. USA will play Brazil in the gold medal match, which is Thursday at 9am.
  • USA men's water polo team qualifies for the quarterfinals by beating Germany 8-7.
  • Men's basketball goes 5-0 by beating Germany by 49 and qualifying for the quarterfinals.
  • Men's baseball won against China 9-1 to move their Olympics record to 3-2.
  • USA wins a gold medal in equestrian team jumping.

Sunday, August 17, 2008: 2pm

Great weather pattern continues...

Through Wednesday, we will see sunny skies and highs in the upper 80s to near 90. Humidities will remain comfortable.

However, a low pressure system from the west combined with the remnants of Fay will move towards our area. However, there is a possibility that Fay could be to our east and the other storm from the west could be pushed away by Fay. For now, I will have a 30% chance of rain/storms Thursday-Saturday. Temps will remain in the upper 80s with slightly increased humidities.

Since neither of these systems will bring a cold front, next Sunday will begin a short period of hot and dry conditions. Humidities will be low, but highs will soar to near 90.

Tropical Storm Fay is now forecasted to have 80mph as it hits western Florida, according to the NHC. It currently has 50mph winds. The southern and southwestern parts of Florida, are under a Hurricane Watch. The Florida Keys are under a Hurricane Watch and a Tropical Storm Warning. This is expected to hit Florida early Tuesday morning.

Michael Phelps makes history...
  • Michael Phelps broke the record for most gold medals in a single Olympic Games by winning the 4x100m relay last night.
  • Also in the last night of swimming, Dara Torres, the 41 year old of the USA, won 2 silver medals in the 50m freestyle and the 4x100m relay.
  • USA women's water polo team has advanced to the semifinals to play a team TBD.
  • USA women's basketball team is 5-0 after beating New Zealand by 36 points.
  • USA women's soccer team will play Japan at 9am tomorrow morning in the semifinals.

Cheer on the USA team and the Jeffersonville Little League team. Their game is today at 3:30pm on ABC.

Tropical Storm Fay to effect our weather next week...

The weather continues to be beautiful over the next 3 days. The sunny weather will continue with temps in the mid to upper 80s. The humidities will be very comfortable for August.

However, Tropical Storm Fay is expected to hit Florida sometime on Tuesday morning. It currently has 45 mph winds, but the NHC expects it to have 90mph winds (making it a hurricane) when it hits land Tuesday in Florida.

However, I must say that I slightly disagree with this map. The storm system over the south currently will most likely push the track of this storm further west than the NHC map shows. I would expect it to go more towards Tampa and possible the panhandle of Florida.

What does this mean for our weather? Wednesday, I think that Fay will be too close for the trough to our north, which was supposed to give us our midweek rain, to get to our area. So, the rain chance for Wednesday is very low, but clouds will thicken into the nighttime hours. Temps again will be in the mid to upper 80's, but a Fay approaches, humidities will increase slightly.

Thursday afternoon-Saturday morning will bring a chance of rain from T.S. Fay. The chance will be slight (30%) but we could get some welcome showers. During this period, temps will stay in the mid 80s. However, if the track of the NHC is correct, we will be hard pressed to get any rain out of this.

This means that instead of rain, temps would warm on the backside of the system beginning Friday, with temps reaching 90 by next weekend. Accuweather says no rain for us until the 28th...

This is a very complex forecast that I will update as more info becomes available...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Jeffersonville Little League baseball team was expected to play last night, but the game was delayed to this morning. The Jeffersonville team lost to Maryland 3-2, though Maryland did not get 1 hit! They scored on a fielding error by Jeffersonville, and 2 wild pitches. Chandler Dale scored a run for Jeffersonville, and Austin Hines scored a solo HR.

The final out was recorded when Chandler Dale nearly score the tying run in the top of 6th (with 2 outs). The first baseman had to dive to touch 1st base before the runner got there. Otherwise, the game would have been tied.

Jeff/GRC will play tomorrow at 3:30pm against Louisiana on ABC HD, and Tuesday at 2pm against Washington on ESPN HD. They must win both of these games to advance.

More gold in the pool for Michael Phelps...

  • Michael Phelps won his 7th gold in this Olympics, which is just one away from BREAKING the record of most gold in one Olympics. He beat Milarod Cavic of Serbia by 0.01 seconds.
  • Tyson Gay of the USA did not qualify for the 100m track final. However, Usain Bolt bolted to a world record of 9.69 seconds in winning gold.
  • The USA also won a gold medal in men's skeet shooting.
  • In team sports, the US men's basketball team beat Spain 119-82, moving to 4-0 in the Olympics.

Dry weather pattern continues...

The chances of rain over the next week have diminished, and until at least Sunday we will be dry with temps in the mid to upper 80's. Humidity values will still be comfortable as well.

Monday night through Wednesday morning will be the only periods where we could have a chance of rain. The chances of rain will be slim, in fact, at the most a 30% chance of rain. I would not be surprised to see no rain over this period as humidities remain fairly low for this time of year. Temperatures Monday-Wednesday will remain in the mid 80s.

Thursday and Friday will be the beginning of another hot streak in our area. It will be very dry, and temperatures will most likely reach the upper 80s to lower 90s over this period. Into the following weekend, temperatures could also easily top 90 degrees...

The 15 day forecast from Accuweather has only one rain chance over the next 15 days (Wednesday), with temperatures getting to 90 on Sunday and staying there for over a week...

The tropical disturbance that I mentioned yesterday is about to become a tropical depression. A lot of forecast predict it will strengthen into a major hurricane because of the extremely warm waters. Where will the storm go if it develops? Here are some models of where the storm will go, with each different colored line representing a different model...

The thing to remember is that this storm has NOT developed yet, so it is way too soon to make any outlandish predictions.

Day 7 of 16 of the Olympics is in the books in Beijing...

The USA had lots to celebrate after a day of no gold on Thursday. Lots of gold medals were earned by US athletes. Here's a recap of Friday's action...

  • Nastia Liukin of the USA won the Women's Gymnastics Individual All Around gold medal, with Shawn Johnson of the USA winning silver.
  • Michael Phelps won his 6th gold medal of these Olympics in the 200m IM. He is only 1 gold away from tying the all time record for most gold medals earned in one Olympics.
  • Rebecca Soni of the USA won gold in the 200m breaststroke.
  • USA's Ryan Lochte and Aaron Piersol went gold-silver (respectively) in the 200m backstroke.
  • The US women's soccer team beat Canada 2-1 in their quarterfinal, and they will advance to the semifinals to play
  • The US women's basketball team moves to 4-0 by beating Spain 93-55.
  • The US women's water polo team moves to 2-0 with 1 ties by beating Russia 12-7.
  • The US baseball team lost to Cuba 5-4 in 11 innings, moving their Olympics record to 1-2.
  • Correction from yesterday: The US soccer team did NOT make it to the quarterfinals.

Tonight, Michael Phelps will swim for his 7th gold medal in the 100m butterfly, LIVE at 10pm on NBC. Three other swimming finals will take place as well...

More great weather on the way...

There is a chance of storms through early this evening, but these will weaken and end by sunset...

Tomorrow-Sunday will all have great weather for this time of year. The humidity will be a touch higher than the past week, but temps will stay in the low to mid 80s. I have taken the rain chances out because they are too low to even have mention.

However, Monday afternoon-Wednesday morning have an off and on chance of storms. Temperature conditions will stay more or less the same, but isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible during this time period.

Thursday will dry out, but a warming trend will begin. Temps will only be in the mid 80's Thursday, but after that, hot and dry weather is likely...

The National Hurricane Center believes that a tropical wave may develop into an organized system over the next 48 hours. This storm would move up the coast of Cuba and possibly towards Miami, FL, or bend northeast and head somewhere up the east coast...

A disappointing day at the Olympics for the USA...
  • No gold medals
  • USA men's water polo lost 4-2 to Serbia
  • However, USA basketball went to 3-0 by beating Greece 92-69.
  • Also, the men's baseball team beat Netherlands 7-0 to move to a 1-1 record.

Tonight, Michael Phelps headlines 4 swimming finals, LIVE on NBC at 10pm. Also, the Women's Gymnastics Individual All Around Final, featuring Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin of the USA, LIVE on NBC at 11pm...

Storm chances return to the area...

Though today will be dry, a lot of models have a chance of storms from Thursday-Tuesday. I really don't buy it because of our lack of moisture. So, here are my thoughts on the chances of storms...
  • 10% chance of storms Thursday and Friday
  • 20% chance of storms Saturday
  • 30% chnace of storms Sunday
  • 40% chance of storms Monday
  • 20% chance of storms Tuesday

Throughout this period, humidities will remain fairly low for this time of year, and temperatures in the lower to mid 80s.

Wednesday, we will be back into the mid 80's with clear skies and low humidities...

Now some other stories from news and sports...

On Sunday in the PGA Championship, Padraig Harrington won by 2 strokes, becoming one of the few to win 2 golf major championships in a row...

The Olympics are in full swing...among the headlines...

  • Michael Phelps has now won more gold medals than any individual in history. He has won 5 this Olympics and is going for the 7 gold medal record. He has also broken the world record in all the events in which he won gold medals.
  • The USA men's gymnastics team captured a bronze in team competition while the women's team took a silver.
  • The country of Togo, who has one competitor in the Olympics, captured a bronze medal in canoe-kayak.
  • The USA women's basketball team is 3-0 and the men's team is 2-0.
  • The USA men's and women's soccer teams have advanced to the quarterfinals...
  • The USA men's water polo team is 2-0 while the women's team is 1-0 with 1 tie.
  • The USA baseball team lost their first game 8-7 to South Korea.

As to what's to come in the Olympics...

  • Men's Gymnastics Individual All Around final is tonight at 10:30pm on NBC
  • Swimming finals including Aaron Piersol, Ryan Lockte, and Michael Phelps, tonight at 10pm ET on NBC.

A team from Jeffersonville, Indiana has made it to the Little League World Series. I happen to know one of the young men on the team (Chandler Dale), so this team will have my full alliegance heading into this year's World Series. Here is their schedule for pool play... (Jeffersonville is indicated as "Indiana")

  1. Indiana vs. Maryland: Friday at 8pm on ESPN
  2. Indiana vs. Louisiana: Sunday at 3:30pm on ABC (HD)

Beautiful streak of weather continues...

After today, we will have one last day of nice weather (tomorrow). The weather will be just the same as today with highs in the lower 80's.

Thursday-Monday, there is a chance of storms every day as moisture values increase slightly. Over this period, temps will still be in the lower 80's, but a chance of storms exists each day.

Tuesday, things should clear out and we will return to our wonderful weather pattern, as the highs will be around 80.

Back from camp...

I have returned from summer camp (which was great)...I tried to get a few lightning shots of the sky lighting up with a disposable camera (not easy), but I think I may have 2 good ones. No digital cameras were allowed by campers, so I have to have these pics put onto a CD.

Anyway, there is a lot of humidity in the air today, and with that there is a chance for isolated showers through tomorrow morning. Tonights lows will be in the upper 60's with highs tomorrow in the mid 80's.

Friday-Tuesday will be great days with highs in the 80-85 degree range and lows in the 57-62 degree range (free A/C range).

Note that some computer models bring a chance of storms into the area Sunday night-Tuesday, but will leave that out of the forecast for now.

I think our next chance for rain will be next Wednesday, as humidity is sufficient for a few storms...

Homesick Hiatus in Henryville

I will be gone at summer camp from Sunday-Wednesday, so for more weather information, use the links on the side of the blog.

I will post again beginning on Wednesday...

Heat and humidity for the beginning of next week...

Sunday will be an average summer day with dewpoints in the lower 60's and highs in the upper 80's to lower 90's. However, with light winds, there is an AQ Alert for tomorrow, so sensitive groups should not spend much time outside.

Expect more AQ alerts Monday and Tuesday...Monday's highs will be in the lower to mid 90's with dewpoints in the middle 60's, but light winds will keep air pollution high. Monday's heat indices could rise to near 100.

CODE Red for Tuesday...

Tuesday will be the climax of the weather of the past 2-3 weeks, with temperatures rising to the middle 90's to 100 degree temps possible in some spots. A heat advisory may also be put out for Tuesday, as dewpoints in the lower 70's may cause heat indices to rise to 105 degrees!!!

Tuesday night will begin the breaking of this hot pattern. We are in a 30% severe weather risk from the SPC for Tuesday. Damaging winds are likely to be the main threat with this, but we will have to see how it evolves.

Wednesday and Thursday will hold a chance of lingering showers. Rain cooled highs will be in the middle 80's.

Next Friday-Saturday will be sunny with highs in the middle to upper 80's, and much very comfortable humidity levels...

August 1, 2008: 8pm

Jump into severe...

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for most of our area until 1am Saturday morning...winds to 70mph and hail to 1.5 inches in diameter area possible.

The best threat out of these storms in damaging winds.

Though I do not anticipate this to be a major event, and that it doesn't look like much right now, there is the possiblility of a few damaging wind gusts within the watch area. The best time for this would be between 10pm and 1am over our area.

These storms are just getting started, so use the links on my blog for more info as these storms fire...

Meanwhile, Saturday and Sunday will be warm but not humid with highs in the lower 90's.

However, Monday and Tuesday are a different story...highs will be in the UPPER 90's and dewpoints will rise into the upper 60's, making heat indices to near 105!!! People should not spend to much time outdoors on these days, as maximum exposure to this kind of heat can cause heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The SPC has a risk of severe weather for southern Indiana on Wednesday, as a front comes to wipe out this hot streak. The storms could be severe. Wednesday-Thursday's highs will be in the upper 80's to lower 90's, but very humid on Wednesday. The humidity will begin to decrease Thursday.

Next Friday will be less humid and in the middle 80's with clear skies.
