Tuesday, September 30, 2008: 8:30pm

First off, John Belski put a great post this evening on his blog about the so called "fall tornado season" that we sometimes have around here. I would encourage that you would read it. You can click on the "Belski's Blog" link on the side of my blog to view his blog...

Meanwhile, after some storms and beneficial rain last night, the weather cleared up nicely this afternoon. Wednesday-Friday will be beautiful with temps between 64-69 and lows in the mid to upper 40s. Some places could get to the lower 40s tonight and tomorrow night.

Saturday-Tuesday will feature slightly warmer temps, with lows still very cool in the upper 40s/lower 50s, but highs rising into the 69-74 degree range.

40% chance of rain relief tonight and tomorrow morning...

We have this chance of rain and maybe a storm tonight. The SPC has us in a 5% chance of severe but I'm not sure why they're thinking this. I think rain relief is the big thing with this storm...not severe. Tomorrow morning, showers will linger, but it will begin clearing in the late afternoon with highs around 70.

After this, the weather will be dry, clear, and quite fall like with temperatures in the low to mid 60s Wednesday and Thursday, upper 60s to lower 70s Friday-Sunday, and lower-mid 70s next Monday and Tuesday. The next chance of rain is too far out to depict as of now...

Tropics: Subtropical Storm Laura has developed and is heading towards Greenland/UK.

Sunday, September 28, 2008: 9:45pm

Tomorrow will be the last day in the lower 80s...at least for a while, that is. It will remain dry tomorrow afternoon...

Late tomorrow night, and most likely Tuesday morning, a 40% chance of showers and MAYBE a storm is forecast. This will bring in the first cool weather of the season!

Wednesday-Friday will be very dry and fall like with temps in the mid to upper 60s. This weather will continue into next weekend, with warming temps that could reach the lower 70s. Some places will stay in the upper 60s, however.

Hurricane Kyle (75mph) is hitting Nova Scotia at this time with minor impacts on Maine. An interesting system could be developing in the Atlantic as well...stay tuned...

Saturday, September 27, 2008: 1pm

The weather remains calm...

Today-Monday will be dry, but at times overcast, with highs in the lower 80s.

Tuesday will bring a slight 30% chance of showers, with temps dropping into the middle 70s.

Wednesday-Saturday will be very fall like with dry weather and temperatures in the mid to upper 60s!!!

Tropical Kyle is racing through the Atlantic. It will affect the east coast and should directly hit land as a Category 1 hurricane. It is forecast to have 80mph winds when it hits land. Estimated place of landfall is just off the east coast of Maine (NHC).

Thursday, September 25, 2008: 9pm

I'm getting ready to drive!!!

I earned my learner's permit yesterday, and can get my offical operator's licence on March 21, 2009.

Meanwhile, the weather will remain sunny and dry through Monday with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

Tuesday will feature a slight chance of showers, but the big deal will be the fact that temps will cool into the 70-75 degree range.

These cooler temperatures should prevail Wednesday-Thursday as well. The NWS says that temps Thursday morning could be as low as the upper 30s!!! Get ready for fall!!!

There is a new tropical storm...Tropical Storm Kyle could become a minimal hurricane and slightly impact the East Coast.

The CPC has us in an abnormally dry spell in southern Indiana, with Louisville and points south in a moderate drought. The excepting is southern Kentucky, which is in a severe drought...

Wednesday, September 24, 2008: 4pm

The weather stays the same...

Same forecast through Sunday, dry with temps in the lower 80s. Monday, temps will drop to the upper 70s to near 80. Tuesday-Wednesday will feature a slight chance of showers with temps in the 70-75 degree range...

Accuweather says that we could have temps in the lower to mid 60s next week, into the first days of October...

A few things to catch up on...

I was on the front row of the 17th hole on Sunday as the US claimed the Ryder Cup about 20 yards from us. We didn't do anything special to get to that spot, we simply guessed where the Ryder Cup would end and got there early. By the time the groups came through, there were 10,000 people standing around the hole!!! That was a great experience, and a great 16th birthday present (yesterday was my birthday)!!!

After this Ryder Cup euphoria, I actually played golf yesterday...and what a beautiful day it was...

Weatherwise, it should be dry through Sunday with temps in the lower to mid 80s.
Monday and Tuesday, a cool front will come through, but I'm not sure if there will be rain with it yet, so for now I will say it will remain dry...

Saturday, September 20, 2008: 9pm

Ryder Cup update...

After 2 days of action, the US team leads the Europeans 9-7. The US only needs 5.5 points to claim the Ryder Cup. Live coverage will be on NBC at noon tomorrow...

Isolated showers are possible tomorrow, but temps will be comfortable around 80 to the lower 80s.

The rest of the week will be clear and dry with highs in the lower 80s.

The USA pride is alive...

I had the privilege to go to the Ryder Cup yesterday for the first day of competition. The atmosphere was amazing to say the least. My dad and I got to see all of the best golf players in the world. At the end of the day, all of the players and captains gathered around the final match on the course to support. We got to give high fives to Phil Michelson, Nick Faldo, Anthony Kim, and a number of other people on both teams.

The environment was great, but the best thing is that the US leads by 3 points right now, 5.5 to 2.5.

Among the celeberties, Michael Jordan was roaming the golf course, and so was George H.W. Bush.

I may get to go on the final day, Sunday, and it will be electric on Sunday!!!

Meanwhile, we have a chance of isolated showers today and tomorrow, but all next week will be clear with highs mainly in the lower to mid 80s.

GO USA!

15 minutes after my last post on Sunday, power went out for us and has never come back on. I am at a place with power and internet for this post. Above is a map of peak wind gusts, with 81mph the highest in Salem, IN, where I was for part of the storm.
I will post more after the power is back on...
Also, I think I am about to get a digital camera so I can use my own pics. :)

STORM ALERT: Sunday, September 14, 2008: 8am

Storm alert mode begins now...

Today's storm alert is for the remnants of Hurricane Ike heading towards our area. With temperatures in the middle to upper 80s, dewpoints near 70, and winds to 45mph, there will be plenty of instability for storms to develop in the heat of the afternoon as Ike approaches.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the area in a 5% chance of tornadoes this afternoon and evening...which is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms. Also, a wind advisory is in affect from 10am today-8pm today. Winds are expected to gust to up to 45mph. Also, amounts of rain up to 1 inch are possible...

As the remnants of Ike interact with a cold front, storms will develop. With the rotation of Ike, some isolated tornadoes and wind damage are possible this afternoon...stay tuned for more during this storm alert...

Saturday, September 13, 2008: 7pm

Hurricane Ike hit Galveston, TX, at 2:10am CDT this morning. Here is just one of the many pictures of devastated Houston.

Our weather will take an interesting turn tomorrow after a very hut and humid day today. A wind advisory is in effect for tomorrow from 10am to 8pm. Sustained winds of 30mph are expected, with gusts to 45-50mph.

Tomorrow, some rain will hit our are tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. Some 1-2 inch totals are possible depending on the track of Ike. If Ike comes into southern Indiana, isolated tornadoes are likely to occur over our area. The SPC has us in a 5% chance of tornadoes tomorrow...

Meanwhile, Monday-the Ryder Cup will be nice...all next week, highs will be in the 75-80 degree range, with lows in the 50s...

Friday, September 12, 2008: 7:15pm

Hurricane Ike is about to hit Galveston and Houston, Texas, as a Category 2/3, with 110mph winds. Galveston has a 17 foot storm wall, and storm surges are expected to be up to 20 feet, with isolated places of 25 feet. Stay tuned to the NHC and The Weather Channel for more...

There is the potential of an isolated tornado over the next couple hours...this should not be a big deal , but it is still something to talk about.

Tomorrow will have some isolated showers/storms tomorrow, but it will be very hot and humid with highs between 85-90 degrees with dewpoints in the 70s.

Sunday and Monday will bring 1-3 inches of rain to the area. It will be very breezy on Sunday, with a 5% chance of isolated tornadoes with Ike. Otherwise, there will be lots of rain over this period...
  • Tuesday-Friday will have much less humid weather, with temps in the middle 70s to 80.
  • The Ryder Cup begins next Friday, with beautiful weather continuing...

Thursday, September 11, 2008: 8pm

Here is the current track of Hurricane Ike...

It currently is a category 2 with winds of 100mph. The storm is predicted to be a Category 3 with 120mph winds as it hits land near Galveston, TX, at 1am on Saturday morning. This track will take Ike right towards Houston.

The first million people have evacuated Galveston with many more evactuating from Houston and other Texas cities along the coast. All Houston airports will shut down at 2pm CDT tomorrow...more are expected to evacuate tomorrow.

Meanwhile, our weather has taken an interesting turn. We will see a good chance of off and on rain for tonight, as well as tomorrow and tomorrow night. This could amount to as much as an inch of rain for this period. Temps in southern Indiana will stay below 80 degrees for Friday, while Kentucky could get into the lower 80s.

Saturday will leave lingering showers over southern Indiana, with clearing across Kentucky. Highs might reach 80 degrees in southern Indiana while temperatures could climb to the upper 80s in Kentucky with lots of humidity.

This will set the stage for an entrance of Hurricane Ike. Ike will start affecting the area on Saturday night with scattered showers/storms.

Sunday will be a VERY INTERESTING day to watch. Winds will be very gusty up to 50mph, and lots of rain is likely to occur. Some isolated tornadoes could occur along with the rain/storms on Sunday with the extreme rotation of the storm. This could be a very fascinating weekend to watch, stay tuned...

The HPC forecast that 3-5 inches of rain is likely over our area in the Friday-Wednesday time period...

Meanwhile, Tuesday-Thursday, after Ike comes through, temps will drop to the mid-upper 70s with clear skies and nighttime lows in the lower to mid 50s.
Alex C.

Wednesday, September 10, 2008: 5:30pm

Ike is now the big story...

Hurricane Ike currently has winds of 100mph and is heading towards the TX coast. The NHC predicts a landfall just north of Corpus Christi, TX, and south of Houston. THE NHC NOW PREDICTS THAT HURRICANE IKE WILL HAVE CATEGORY 4 WINDS OF 135MPH WITHIN 12 HOURS OF HITTING TEXAS! Stay tuned for more, and as always you can always track Ike by clicking on the National Hurricane Center link on the side of my blog...
Also, notice that the track of Ike might take the storm our way...

Meanwhile, a lot of rain could be heading our way in the near future...

Tomorrow, I will introduce a 30% chance of afternoon showers/storms, as highs make it to around 80 again.

However, Thursday night-Saturday morning could be a substancial rain event for our area. As a warm front slowly drifts north, widespread rain/storms will take over the area. Temps will be in the mid 70s with the rain cooled air.

Saturday will feature leftover light showers, with temps in the upper 70s.

Sunday will be cloudy but dry with highs in the upper 70s.

Meanwhile, Sunday night-Tuesday will feature additional rain from Hurricane Ike. Monday could have a small severe weather threat depending on the track, but we will definitely get some rain out of this as well. Temps will hold steady in the mid 70s.

Wednesday will help dry us out because it will be sunny with highs in the mid 70s.

Tuesday, September 9, 2008: 7:30pm

Here is the current track of Hurricane Ike...

The NHC says the storm will hit Texas as a category 3 with 115mph winds. The storm currently has 75mph winds. Notice that the track of the storm could take it towards our area after it hits land...

Meanwhile, enjoy our weather tomorrow and Thursday as it will be nice with temps around or just above 80.

However, late Thursday night through Friday, a slow moving cool front will move towards our area. This will bring us a good 60% chance of rain over this period. We could have some one inch totals on these days. The temperatures will be held down to the mid 70s during this period.

After a cloudy Saturday with lingering showers and highs in the upper 70s, the remnants of Hurricane Ike could head towards our area. It is very early to tell, but Sunday-Tuesday morning could bring some very substancial rain to the area. Temps will be held in the mid 70s during this period as well. Stay tuned for updates on the track of Ike...

Alex C.

Monday, September 8, 2008

Monday, September 8, 2008: 10pm

I've finally conceded and added a 30% chance of rain for tonight through tomorrow morning, but don't expect anything major...

Sunny skies will temps in the lower 80s will prevail Wednesday and Thursday, with comfortable humidities.

As a cool front and potentially Ike impact our area Friday-Monday, I will put a 40% chance of rain for all of these days. Temps will remain in the lower to mid 80s.

Hurricane Ike is still barely a hurricane with 80mph winds on the south side of Cuba right now. It is forecasted to hit western Cuba and then shoot into the Gulf of Mexico. According to the NHC, it will head towards Houston, becoming a Category 3 with 115mph winds...stay tuned...

Alex C.

Sunday, September 7, 2008

Sunday, September 7, 2008: 8am

Here is the track of Ike. It currently has 135mph winds (category 4). The track takes it on a path strangely similar to Gustav as it heads towards the Gulf Coast as a possible category 3. (NHC)

Alex C.

Saturday, September 6, 2008

Saturday, September 6, 2008: 5:30pm

I will keep our forecast the same as I had for yesterday: dry through Wednesday with highs in the low to mid 80s.

There is a slight chance of rain next Thursday-Friday with the uncertainty of Hurricane Ike. Temps should remain steady and Saturday should clear out from any rain we may have. Temps will remain in the low 80s during this period.

Hurricane Ike is now a Category 4 with winds of 135mph. It is expected to hit Cuba as a Category 4 with winds of 145mph. Then it will head into the Gulf with Category 3 strength.

Again, I must tell you that the NHC is WRONG with the track of Ike, because 9 times out of 10, it will go over water instead of straight across Cuba. So, I think it will hit Cuba and go out the south and through the Yucatan Channel.

Alex C.

Saturday, September 6, 2008: 11:30am

Here is Ike's track...Ike currently has 110mph winds. It is predicted to hit Cuba as a category 3 and then head into the Gulf as a category 3.

Friday, September 5, 2008: 8pm

Beneficial rains are here...

It was nice to have wet grass today, and it has turned a little greener already. Some drizzle will persist through the evening. Meanwhile, it did not even get to 72 degrees at my house today!!!

Saturday-Wednesday look to be dry. Some forecasts have a rain chance for Monday night and Tuesday, but it is bad timing so I won't put the chance in for now. Highs Saturday-Monday will be in the mid 80s, with highs Tuesday-Wednesday in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Humidities will be quite comfortable as well throughout the period. The day with the most humidity will be Monday, but even that will not be too bad.

There are many questions about our forecast, including the path of Ike, after Wednesday...so for now will put a chance of isolated showers/storms in the forecast with highs in the lower 80s.

The Tropical update includes the impending landfall of Tropical Storm Hanna. It will hit as a borderline tropical storm/hurricane with winds of 70-75mph on the South Carolina/North Carolina coastline. This landfall will be overnight tonight. I don't have a track map because it will be moving so fast. It will impact the entire east coast over the next 48 hours, before cruising off the coast and heading towards Britain as a tropical storm on Wednesday. The winds could reach 50mph as it approaches Britain.

However, Hurricane Ike will be the big story from now on.

Ike has 115 mph at this time, making it a Category 3. The NHC says do not pay attention to the end of the track because they don't have much of a clue of what it will do after 72 hours. The storm is predicted to have Category 4 winds of 135mph as it possibly approaches Florida...

Alex C.

Thursday, September 4, 2008

Thursday, September 4, 2008: 7pm

Tropical Storm Hanna has 65mph winds. It is expected to hit the Carolinas as a tropical storm...

Hurricane Ike is a category 4 with 135mph. It is expected to possibly hit Florida as a category 3 with 125mph (NHC).

Rain is on the way...

The rain is here!!! It will continue off and on through tomorrow. We could have up to a half an inch in some places...it will be very welcome rain. Winds could gust to 45mph, but no storms are expected.

Saturday-Thursday will be some great days in our weather. I will keep any rain chance out for now, with nice temps from 80-85. There could be rain on Tuesday, but I will keep it out of the forecast for now...

Alex C.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

Wednesday, September 3, 2008: 7:35pm

Today, I will talk about our weather first...

Today was the true example of a 20% chance of rain...it rained in Louisville, Sellersburg, New Albany, 1 mile from my house, but not at my house!!!

Tomorrow will have just a slightly better chance of rain. I will put in a 30% chance for tomorrow. Temps will be held down in the upper 80s but with quite uncomfortable humidities.

Tomorrow night is when things really get interesting...

The SPC has a 15% chance of severe to our west on Thursday night, with a 5% chance for us. This is primarily due to the risk of isolated tornadoes from the remnants of Gustav. We will see how this plays out, but it will not be a major event...

Thursday night through Friday will have a 50% chance of rain which would be well received in this area. Temps will be in the lower 80s because of the rain.

Saturday-Wednesday look dry as of now, and temperatures will be comfortable. It will be dry, but temps will be in the lower 80s with low humidities.

Here is the track of Tropical Storm Hanna...it currently has 60mph winds and is forecast to become a category 1 hurricane with 80mph winds before hitting North Carolina early Saturday morning and then scooting up the east coast...

You will be definitely hearing more about Hurricane Ike in the days to come...here is the track of Ike...

Ike currently has 80mph winds, and is forecast by the NHC to have 115mph winds, (Category 3) as it approaches Florida early next week...stay tuned...

Alex C.

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Tuesday, September 2, 2008: 7:30pm

Quickly, here are the tracks of T.S. Hanna and Ike (both with 65mph winds).

T.S. Hanna is expected to hit South Carolina with 90mph winds (category 1 hurricane) on Friday.

On the other hand, T.S. Ike is forecast to head towards Cuba on Sunday with 110mph winds. Where it goes from there is definitely anyone's guess.

There is also T.S. Josephine, but it is far from any major land areas at this time.

Gustav caused some overflow into New Orleans, but major flooding was not a problem. For more on all of these storms, use the link to the NHC, and for Gustav use the link to the HPC and SPC. All of these are on the side of the blog...

Our weather is not nearly as exciting, as the next 2 days will be hot and dry. Temps will be in the lower 90s with bearable humidity.

Friday and Saturday seem to be our only chance of rain from Gustav. Some isolated showers/storms may make it to our area, but it appears the best rains will stay to the west. Temps will remain in the upper 80s through this period.

Sunday-Tuesday look to be dry at this time, with cooler but still dry temperatures in the middle 80s.

Alex C.

Monday, September 1, 2008: 4pm

Gustav hits land...

Hurricane Gustav hit land 55 miles SW of New Orleans this morning with winds of 110mph, a category 2. There is some damage but NO homes have been flooded in New Orleans in NO levees have been breached. However, the heavy rain, winds, and possibility of tornadoes continues. Current winds are at 90mph, a category 1.

Here is the 5 day track of Gustav...

As you can see, it will be affecting the same areas for many days to come. However, we could get some of the moisture into our area later on in the week (local weather discussion below).

Meanwhile, fresh off the press, Tropical Storm Hanna has graduated to Hurricane Hanna with 75 mph winds, a Category 1.

Forecasts keep it as a category one with winds up to 90mph until landfall on Friday in the FL/GA/SC area. As you can see, some of that moisture could make it into our area as well.

The tropics are definitely active right now with Gustav and Hanna, but how about Tropical Depression #9. Yes, another storm has developed in the Atlantic! Three storms are active right now...here is it's track...

This storm is expected to become a hurricane and move towards the Bahamas next weekend. Winds by Saturday are anticipated to be at 80-90mph. Of course, a lot can change with this as this becomes better organized and moves closer to the US. This storm does look poised to make a US landfall late this weekend into early next week.

When this storm does become a tropical storm, it will be Tropical Storm Ike.

I feel that you can definitely gain something by looking at the Atlantic as a whole...

That storm coming off the coast of Africa is also expected to turn into a tropical depression later today...

I will definitely keep an eye on all of this, but now I will talk about our weather...
  • Until Thursday, we will stay dry and hot with highs in the lower 90s with humidities slowly creeping up throughout the week...
  • Friday-Monday will offer us isolated chances of rain and storms depending on the inland tracks of Gustav and Hanna. Highs will remain in the mid to upper 80s, but increased humidities will make it feel the same as the rest of the days this week.
  • Stay tuned for more on all of this on the blog...
Alex C.
