Rain and storms tonight...
Expect some rain and storms, with 1/2-1" rain totals. There could be some gusty winds, but severe weather is not expected. Big time cooldown with this front, as temps will be in the 30s by Saturday.

Snow chance could arrive Saturday, but it looks like less than 1" of accumulation.

Rain/snow chance tomorrow...

Rain/snow will begin tomorrow, changing to snow in the afternoon. My current thinking is that we will have around 1 inch. For the rest of the forecast, see the previous post.

As many of you know by now, there was a police shooting in Jeffersonville. One of the officers shot was Patrolman Keith Broady, one of my good friends. Please keep Broady and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Rain coming in tonight...

Tonight and tomorrow will bring up to a 1/2 inch of rain to the area. It will also be quite breezy tomorrow, with winds to 35mph. It will turn sharply colder after the front comes through.

Saturday will bring a chance of snow. Being a clipper system, I would think that 1-3 inches of snow is likely across the region.

2/11/09: 7:15pm

Very windy conditions continue...

My power has been flickering this afternoon and evening, and thus my desktop keeps going off. Not as much damage from storms as from the wind that has come after it. I had a 60mph gust during a quick 5 minute storm around 4pm. There was small hail, lightning, and driving rain as well. There are >50,000 in the area without power right now. For damage reports, see the NWS website...

We will see some schools closed tomorrow...stay tuned to TV for that...

Tornado Watch for southern Indiana, central Kentucky, southwest Ohio, and central Tennessee through 6pm EST...probabilities for this watch from the SPC....

Probability of 1 or more strong (F2-F5) tornadoes Low (20%)
Wind...Probability of 10 or more severe wind events High (70%)
Probability of 1 or more wind events > 65 knots Mod (30%)
Hail...Probability of 10 or more severe hail events Low (10%)
Probability of 1 or more hailstones > 2 inches Low (<5%)
Combined Severe Hail/Wind...Probability of 6 or more combined severe hail/wind events High (80%).

2/11/09: 9:15am

5% chance tornadoes today...

30% chance of winds >58mph...

High Wind Warning today...winds up to 60mph outside of storms, primarilly at and after noon today. Squall line will press through between 12-3pm, with some severe gusts to 70mph. There has been some sun peeking out over Louisville, and the skies are beginning to brighten up in southern Indiana as well. This would just add fuel to the fire of this storm. Dew points are below 60, which will limit the widespread severe, but sunshine will bring the potential for some isolated tornadoes...stay tuned...

STORM ALERT: 2/10/09: 8:30pm

STORM ALERT...

NWS has issued a High Wind warning for southern Indiana and north central Kentucky from 7am-10pm Wednesday...SPC outlines our area in a 30% chance of severe weather Wednesday.

Here's how I think it will play out...
  • 7am: 20-30mph winds with gusts to 45mph, cloudy
  • 10am: 25-35mph winds with gusts to 50mph, mostly cloudy
  • 12pm: 30-40 mph winds with gusts to 60mph, partly sunny
  • 2pm: Squall line of severe thunderstorms; damaging winds >60mph, approaching 70mph.
  • 4pm: 30-40 mph winds with gusts to 55mph, partly cloudy
  • 10pm: 20-30 mph winds with gust to 40mph, cloudy

Winds will increase throughout the morning and early afternoon hours. With the recent wind storm, ice storm, and saturated grounds, expect tree limbs that are broken to fall, along with some trees. Some areas will again see power outages.

The line of severe storms coming in around 2pm is a tricky one to forecast. The rains should stop during the morning, but the question is whether the sun will come out or not. I think it will peek out, but not for long. If it does clear during the morning, expect damaging winds to 80mph and scattered tornadoes. The could be a devastating situation for our already weather-beaten area if the sun does come out tomorrow.

Will post tomorrow morning, as I am in storm alert mode...

Monday, February 9th, 2009: 9pm

Main part of the forecast revolves around the monster storm coming in on Wednesday...

The SPC has a slight risk (15%) of severe storms for Wednesday...

The main question with this storm is instability. It will be warm enough! Winds will be gusting all day to near 50mph, so the wind intensity will be strong enough for any storm to produce >60mph winds. There is also been talk that we could have some isolated tornadoes with this storm. I do not think we will, because I don't think we'll see any sunshine. If we do see sunshine, the wind shear is great enough for a potential of isolated tornadoes...

More tomorrow on this storm...

Ryan Hoke did the weather forecast on WAVE 3 this evening...congrats to him on this latest accomplishment. He has a weather website at http://www.ryanweather.org/, and a weather blog at http://ryanweather.blogspot.com/.

Sunday, February 8th, 2009: 8:45pm

Active weather period upcoming...

Tomorrow night, we will see some rain and maybe some rumbles of thunder...lasting into Tuesday morning. We could see 1/2" of rain from this system.

There will be another better chance of storms Wednesday. The SPC indicates that some of the storms could be severe with damaging winds. Whatever the case, Wednesday will be a warm, windy, rainy day. There will be a cooldown after this into the weekend.

My thoughts on the potential for severe...Dew points will not be high enough and instability will be limited. Thus, damaging winds would be the main threat, not tornadoes.

Thursday, February 5th, 2009: 7pm

The warmup begins...

Main weather story centers around the rain and storms for the weekend and next week. Saturday will just have scattered showers. We may see clearing on Sunday with temps warming to near 60, before a chance of storms move in at night. On Monday, we will see widespread showers until the nighttime hours. After a warm day of clearing Tuesday, we will see more storms on Wednesday.

Southern Indiana saw a couple inches of snow today, with some 5-6" amounts from Trimble and Henry Counties in Kentucky.

Forecast looks cold for the next two days, with some snow showers tomorrow morning. We will be in the single digits Thursday morning. If we stay in clouds tomorrow morning, we may not see highs get to higher than 20!!!

Warmup towards the weekend with a chance of rain and maybe a storm...

February 2nd, 2009: 5pm

The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued Winter Weather Advisory for north central Kentucky and southern Indiana from 4am-7pm Tuesday. 1-3 inches of snow is possible over the advisory area.

Yesterday I called for under 1" of snow, so why has this changed? It's because the other storm moved far enough to the east (further than I expected), which is allowing a clipper system to move into our area, instead of further north. So 1-3 inches can be expected. I think 3 inch amounts are a little aggressive, but a few areas will see around 3 inches.

Nice for the rest of the week until rain comes in for the weekend...

Good luck to the #7 Cardinals as they take on #1 Connecticut tonight in Freedom Hall (7pm, ESPN).

Super Bowl Sunday 2009: 5pm

As you can see, I'm testing with a newer look for the 7-day...I may need to try a different color for the %'s...

The burning question for next week is about the snow. We will see some snow showers, but we will have under 1" accumulations!!!

Now I'm going to watch the Super Bowl! Go Cardinals!
