Tuesday, August 26, 2008: 10pm

Fay did not save the day...

Fay has brought a few welcome downpours to a few areas the past couple days. However, today, there was a 5 minute downpour just 5 minutes from here, but at our house, not 1 drop!!! This is a prime example of just how random all of these showers are and how isolated they are...

Tomorrow morning I still believe there is a 30% chance for the Louisville/southern Indiana area to get a band of rain. However, if we don't get it tomorrow morning, we won't get it. Highs tomorrow will be around 80.

Thursday looks fine with sun and highs in the mid 80s.

The next system will make it's move by Friday, bringing us another 40% chance of showers/storms. However, this will not bring the needed relief that we need to get out of our dry spell.

And if we don't get any rain by Friday, then get ready for another dry spell. Saturday-Tuesday will all be dry with highs in the middle to upper 80s. The saving grace will be that our humidities will not be too high.

However, there is a storm that bears watching for the gulf coast and for our next great rain chance. I told you yesterday that Hurricane Gustav would not travel across Cuba as it was forecast yesterday. Check out today's forecast...



It will not cross Cuba and instead will go on the west side before hitting west Florida, or (most likely) heading into the Gulf and hitting anywhere from Texas to the panhandle of Florida. The winds are currently 75mph, but by Sunday, winds are forecasted to be at 120mph.

There is a loop current that goes between Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula and goes into the Gulf of Mexico, as well as off the Florida straits. This is a place where rapid hurricane intensification could occur. Here is a map of this phenomenon. The red areas are where the current is.



I knew that hurricanes typically intensified in the Gulf of Mexico, but didn't know why until I saw Belski's blog today...

So keep all of this in mind as this storm continues to churn in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico...

Monday, August 25, 2008: 7pm

Grain is pain and rain is gain...

Yes, the grass in our area is beginning to look like a dried up field, and we have had no rain in a long time...and again our chances of rain may be drying up again.

Tonight and tomorrow hold a chance of these isolated showers, but not a good soaking rain. Also, the sun is going to be hidden for a while because of these clouds from Fay. For this reason, I think that tomorrow and Wednesday will have temps staying in the upper 70s, and not making it to 80.

Tomorrow night-Thursday morning, we will have slightly better rain chances thanks to T.D. Fay. I think Wednesday morning holds our best chance of any rain from Fay, as a band of rain could move through. However, I only have a 40% chance of rain in the forecast because it is becoming more likely that all of this rain could miss to the east. I still think some welcome rain is possible, so stay tuned...

Meanwhile, Thursday should have any rain that is over our area ending. Highs will be in the lower 80s.

Friday could be an in between systems day, with temps in the middle 80s.

However, Friday night-Saturday afternoon, a small (30%) chance of showers and storms exists over our area.

After this, Sunday and Monday should be sunny, which is good news for the big Louisville vs. Kentucky football game on Sunday. Highs will be in the mid to possibly upper 80s.

And if you're looking for our next best chance of rain after Fay, look to the south as Tropical Storm Gustav is churning through the Caribbean.



Winds are currently 60mph, but they are expected to reach minimal hurricane strength before hitting Hispanola. This track shows the storm tracking directly over Cuba, but I am almost certain it will not do that. It will most likely track along the western coast of Cuba, like Fay, and then on from there. This could affect Labor Day plans in Florida or the Gulf of Mexico.

One last note...in the LLWS championship yesterday, the US captured it's 4th straight crown as Hawaii defeated Mexico 12-3.

Sunday, August 24, 2008: 6pm

Isolated storms are scattered around the area at this time. Isolated storms are possible through this evening, dissapating overnight.

For this reason, I believe that tomorrow and Tuesday will be dry, with cooler temps in the lower to mid 80s.

Fay's moisture will begin to makes it move a little sooner than previously expected. It appears that Fay's moisture will turn north by Wednesday, bringing us a chance of rain on Wednesday-Friday. The NWS says we could expect showers/storms by Tuesday, but will leave Tuesday dry for now. I think a 40% chance for these Wednesday and Thursday with a 20% on Friday. With cloud cover, temps will be in the lower 80s but with humidity with the tropical moisture in the area.

If we do get rain from Fay, we may have a short time to dry out with highs in the middle 80s. However, the next storm system could arrive next weekend...

LLWS...Mexico beat Japan 5-4 and Hawaii had a 6 run final inning to beat Louisiana 7-5 yesterday. The championship is on ABC right now (I'm taping it), and Japan beat Louisiana 4-3 in the consolation game.

The Olympics have ended...

• USA wins 110 medals, 10 more than 2nd place China. China won the most gold medals.
• USA men's basketball wins gold by beating Spain 118-107.
• USA men's water polo takes silver after losing to Hungary 14-10 in the gold medal match.
• USA men's volleyball wins over Brazil 3-1 to capture the gold medal.

Saturday, August 23, 2008: 11:45am

The next couple days hold rain chances as a weather system moves towards our area...

Today's temps will be around 90 with a 20% chance of a pop up shower/storm. Sunday will have a 40% chance of storms with highs in the middle 80s but the same humidity. Monday will have a 30% chance of lingering showers from the storm system on Sunday.

Tuesday-Wednesday should have slightly lower humidities with temps in the mid 80s. There could be an isolated storm these two days, but I will leave it out of the forecast for now.

Moisture from Fay could arrive here as soon as Thursday night and last through Saturday. It appears that some areas, especially east of Louisville, could get a soaking rain out of this. I will say a 40% chance or rain for Friday-Saturday morning. Temps will be in the rain cooled lower 80s over this period, but there will plenty of humidity with the tropical system around.

• Men's baseball wins bronze medal game by beating Japan 8-4.

At 4pm on NBC, catch the US women's volleyball gold medal match vs. Brazil. At 7:30pm, LIVE men's marathon, along with the men's platform diving final. Track and field finals include: 800m men, 1500m women, 5000m men, 4x400m relay women, 4x400m relay men.

Friday, August 22, 2008: 4pm

WE NEED RAIN!

And our chances of getting some have just gone up! Saturday-Monday hold a 30% chance of rain and storms. Humidities will be like today, but highs in the mid to upper 80s.

Tuesday-Wednesday appear to have a break. Temps will be in the mid 80s with a little less humidity.

However, Fay could finally get picked up and thrown into our area. We could have substancial rain from this depending on the track. I have a 50% chance of rain for Thursday-Friday, with rain possibly lingering into next weekend. Temps will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s due to the rain. Stay tuned for more on this ever changing forecast.

Thursday, August 21, 2008: 9pm

When I say this video is incredible, that does not mean that I like the fact that the man was severely hurt, I'm just in awe of the power on nature...

Meanwhile, our weather does not feature high winds, just sunny skies tomorrow with highs in the low 90s and uncomfortable humidities, much like today.

However, Saturday-Wednesday is an uncertain forecast with the track of Fay and the approaching cold front. Will stay with a 30% chance of rain/storms every day with highs in the upper 80s and humid conditions.

Thursday I will keep dry for now, with slightly lower humidities and highs in the upper 80s. However, the track of Fay is still uncertain, but if we do get rain from it, it should get out by Thursday...

LLWS...Mexico will play Japan on Saturday at 12:30pm on ABC for the right to play in the Little League World Series Championship. Hawaii will play in the US Final vs. either Louisiana or Florida...

• Misty May-Treanor and Kerry Walsh of USA repeat gold in beach volleyball.
• Women's water polo loses to Netherlands 9-8, so the US captures a silver medal.
• USA women's basketball will play Australia Saturday at 10am, LIVE on NBC, for the gold medal. Both teams are undefeated in the Olympics.
• USA women's soccer beats Brazil and wins the gold medal, 1-0 in extra time.
• USA softball team loses to Japan in the gold medal match, so the US took silver.
