Monday, October 27, 2008: 5pm

Yesterday was a warm and windy day with highs approaching 70, but today highs have not gotten to 50. Yet there was not a drop of rain while this cold front came through. This is because we had no moisture to produce rain. Later this week, temps could again reach 70 after a freeze early in the week. This caused me to wonder how we would "get" to winter without a huge storm system. I also wondered if this could cause severe weather. So, I emailed John Belski and Marc Weinberg to see what they had to say about this...

John Belski and Marc Weinberg both agreed that temperature swings like this are typical for this time of year and does not necessarily mean we will have a huge storm system that produces severe. Marc used the example of last night, as the temps have dropped over 20 degrees in 24 hours, yet not a drop of rain occurred. This could be the trend over the next couple of weeks as well. Friday night seems to have the same situation, as a cold front will come through dry because of a lack of moisture.

Marc used the example of sticking a cup of coffee in a freezer. If severe weather was as simple as cold and warm air masses colliding (like last night), you would make a tornado in your own freezer!!! The key is MOISTURE!!! Moisture that would be sufficient for severe weather is currently 1200 miles away!
Thanks to both John and Marc for contributing on this topic...

Onto our weather today...a cold, breezy day today wil lcontinue into tonight. Though temps may reach the freezing point, the wind will help to keep us from having a frost. Tomorrow wil lbe cold with highs only reaching the mid 40s despite some sun.

There is a FREEZE WATCH tomorrow night as the temps drop below freezing in most areas (upper 20s to lower 30s).

Wednesday-Friday will begin another short lived warming trend. Temps will be in the 60-64 degree range over these 3 days. The aforementioned cold front will come through Friday night, which will bring about temps in the lower to mid 50s for the weekend and into Monday.

Election Day forecast will have temps in the low-mid 40s in the morning and highs near 60.
